PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce thermally expandable graphite which is prepd. by inserting a substance which emits a nontoxic gas into a gap between layers of graphite having a small particle size and to improve the flame retardance of a polymer material by using the same. SOLUTION: This thermally expandable graphite is prepd. by inserting a guest compd. comprising an alkali metal and an org. molecule having a functional group easily coordinatable with an alkali metal into a gap between layers of graphite having a particle size of 1-150μm and, when expanded at 700 deg.C, has a ratio of vol. to wt. of 100cc/g or higher. A flame-retardant resin compsn. is prepd. by compounding 100 pts.wt. resin with 5-100 pts.wt. above-prepd. expandable graphite.
