PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the performance of a catalyst for a long time by passing a waste water containing org. matters and a gas containing oxygen gas as a downward flow in a reaction tower packed with a catalyst at specified reaction temp. and reaction pressure to maintain the waste water in a liquid phase so as to effect wet oxidation decomposition of the org. matters. ;SOLUTION: An irrigation type reaction tower 10 is packed with a solid catalyst such as ruthenium deposited on titania spheres. A waste water is supplied by a waste water pump 2 through pipes 1, 3, 5 to a heat exchanger 6 and a heater 8 to be preheated and then supplied through the upper part of the reaction tower 10. Air pressurized by a compressor 4 is introduced to the exit side of the waste water supply pump 2, preheated with the waste water and introduced into the reaction tower 10. The waste water containing org. matters and the air are made to pass as a downward stream in the reaction tower 10 packed with the catalyst under conditions of 100 to 270°C reaction temp. and such pressure to maintain the waste water in a liquid phase. The treated water and the gas drained from the reaction tower 10 are cooled by a heat exchanger 6 and auxiliary cooling device 13 and introduced to a gas-liquid separator 14 where the mixture is divided into a gas phase and a liquid phase.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
