PURPOSE: To reduce iron ore pellet in a short time and produce metallic iron by heating green pellet under a specific temp. condition in a heating furnace after previously removing the stuck moisture to the green pellet composed of powdery iron and solid reducing agent. ;CONSTITUTION: Coal powder as a reducing agent and a small quantity of bentonite powder as binder are mixed with the iron ore powder to produce the green pellet. This green pellet is charged into the reducing furnace whose temp. at the charging hole is higher than the volatile temp. of combustible volatile matter in the green pellet, e.g. ≥1000°C, after removing the stuck moisture at the low temp. heating, and CO and H2 of the combustible volatile matter in the pellet are volatilized, and oxygen-containing gas is supplied and burnt to rapidly raise the pellet temp. Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 in the iron ore is reduced into FeO, and after executing the reducing reaction with the reducing ratio of about 30%, the supply of oxygen-containing gas is stopped and also, the pellet is heated to ≥1250°C to rapidly reduce FeO into Fe.
