PURPOSE:To enlarge coefficient of thermal conductivity in one direction by cutting woven fabric of carbon fiber impregnated with a thermosetting resin in a specific direction, molding, curing, further impregnating pitch or thermosetting resin and carbonizing. CONSTITUTION:Woven fabric of carbon fiber is impregnated with 10-70wt.% solution of thermosetting resin, the solvent is removed to give a fiber/resin composite material, which is cut into a dimension somewhat larger than that of a section in the thickness direction, the cut pieces are laminated in the such a way that the surface of the fabric is faced to the thickness direction, the laminated material is pressurized in the direction of lamination, heated at 50-300 deg.C for 0.2-5 hours and cured to give a molded article. Then the molded article is heated in a gas flow of N2 at =1,000 deg.C and carbonized. Then the prepared carbonized material is impregnated with pitch or thermosetting resin, heated at =1,000 deg.C, carbonized, optionally heated to =2,000 deg.C and graphitized to give the title composite material having about 50wt.% carbon fiber orientated in the thickness direction, =1.2 ratio of coefficient of thermal conductivity in the thickness direction to that in the direction perpendicular to the thickness direction and perpendicular to the face of fiber orientated in the thickness direction and has =1.5w/cm. deg.C coefficient of thermal conductivity in the thickness direction.
