PURPOSE: To provide data processing system and method for managing the recognition of text characters in plural document images. ;CONSTITUTION: A document is a format defined beforehand provided with plural fields including the text character to be recognized. A format definition data set is used for specifying the various features of the fields on the format such as a position or the like. In the format definition data set relating to at least several fields, the value of data acquisition priority is specified and the priority is used for managing the operation loads of a character recognition processing. When this system receives the large amount of document format images, by reducing the number of the fields character recognized on the respective formats, an unprocessed amount is limited and desired throughput for character recognizing the format is maintained. By using the value of the data acquisition priority relating to the respective fields, a character recognition processor is controlled so as to omit processings or quickly executing the low quality processing of a low priority field.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
