PURPOSE:To choose an input sentence or an input word in a short period out of a candidate lattice by calculating the differences of recognized distance among candidates, calculating the means value of these differences, calculating a search preference exponent accordant with the difference of recognized distances from the precedent candidate, and searching the candidates with preference in the order of smaller search preference exponents. CONSTITUTION:A processor 32 is provided together with a search processing part 33, a display 34, a keyboard 35, an input tablet 36, and a character recognizer 37. The difference of recognized distances is calculated between the candidate words, paragraphs or characters outputted from the recognizer 37. Then the mean value is calculated among the differences of recognized distances. Based on this average value, the search preference exponent is calculated in accordance with the difference of recognized distances from the precedent candidate for each candidate word, paragraph or character. Then these candidates are searched with preference in the order of smaller search preference exponents. Thus a correct input sentence or word is chosen, and the searching frequency is reduced. Therefore an input sentence or word can be chosen in a short period out of a candidate lattice.
