PURPOSE:To obtain the austenitic stainless steel having excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance and crevice corrosion resistance and suitable for the use in a high temp. chloride environment by forming it from the compsn. contg. each prescribed amt. of 10 componential elements such as C, si, Ni or the like and regulating the compsn. so that the Ni-balance shown by a specified inequal ity is satisfied. CONSTITUTION:The above stainless steel contg., by weight, =0.08% C, 4 to 6.0% Si, =0.8% Mn, to =0.045% P, =0.005% S, 10 to 25% Ni, 15 to 25% Cr, 1.5 to 4.0% Cu, =0.05% N, 0.005 to 0.1% REM and the balance substantial Fe and satisfying the following condition is offered. As for the condition, the regulation of the compsn. is required so that the Ni-balance shown by the in equality is satisfied. The stainless steel has the above characteristics, further more has excellent manufacturability and is an economical one capable of suppressing the rise of cost to a minimum. Thus, it is suitable as the material for an apparatus treating a neutral chloride soln. in the state of being heated to a high temp.
