PURPOSE:To produce a prenyl ketone useful as perfume, industrial raw material, etc., by reacting carboxylic acid derivative with prenyl magnesium to synthesize the title substance (new substance) and decomposing the substance. CONSTITUTION:A carboxylic acid derivative is reacted with prenyl magnesium to synthesize a compound (new substance) shown by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl, 2-20C alkenyl, 4-30C alkadienyl, 3-15C cycloalkyl, bicyclic or tricyclic substituent group or aryl), which is thermally decomposed or treated with a strong base in an inert solvent and decomposed to give a compound shown by formula II. The thermal decomposition is most preferably carried out at about 460 deg.C.
