PURPOSE:To prepare a dispersant which is useful in reversed phase suspension polymn. of a water-sol. ethylenically unsatd. monomer, gives polymer particles with a large mean particle diameter and reduces buildup on the wall of a polymerizer during polymn. by compounding a specific high mol. surfactant and a low mol. ionic surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A dispersant for reversed phase suspension polymn. is prepd. by compounding 70-99 pts.wt. high mol. surfactant which has an average mol.wt. of 1000-500000 and contains 5-65wt.% repeating units of formula I [wherein R1 is H or CH3; X is a 2-4C alkylene oxide residue (at least 50wt.% of X groups is ethylene oxide residue); R2 is H, 1-2C alkyl, or a 2-5C unsatd. group; and (n) is 3-300] and 35-95wt.% repeating units of formula II (wherein R3 is H or CH3; R4 is 4-60C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, etc.) wherein the sum of the units of formulas I and II is at least 70wt.%; and 1-30 pts.wt. low mol. ionic surfactant contg. an 8-30C hydrophobic group and an ionic group.
