PURPOSE: To obtain a concentrated BF₃ hydrate aqueous solution as a residue by a method in which an α-olefin is oligomerized in the presence of BF₃ and an activating agent, the reaction mixture is washed with water, BF₃ hydrate is extracted with the water soluble activating agent, and wash water is distilled. ;CONSTITUTION: An α-Olefin (example: 1-decene) is oligomerized in the presence of a BF₃ activating agent (preferably n-butanol) selected from water soluble activating agents which have boiling points lower than those of water, a water insoluble activating agent, or BF₃.2H₂O or form azeotropic mixtures with water having boiling points lower than that of BF₃.2H₂O the reaction mixture is washed with water to recover BF₃. By washing with water, BF₃ is extracted as its hydrate, which is distilled at a reduced pressure to obtain concentrated BF₃ hydrate. In this way, BF₃ can be removed environmentally safely.
