PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the subject compound which is a raw material, etc., for producing cresol in high selectivity for a short time by bringing sec- butyltoluene into contact with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a basic compound using a nickel complex as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:sec-Butyltoluene is brought into contact with a molecular oxygen-containing gas, such as oxygen, air or a mixed gas prepared by diluting the oxygen with an inert gas, in the presence of a basic compound (e.g. NaOH or NaHCO3) using a nickel complex as a catalyst to afford sec-butyltoluene hydroperoxide. The reaction is carried out using the nickel complex concentration in the reaction system within the range of normally 0.001-1g/l-reaction solution at 100-140 deg.C temperature.
