An opening cylinder for an off-end spinning assembly has carding wire which is hardened before fitting to the opening cylinder (12). The wire (3) is wound into a spiral coil prior to coated hardening and placement on the cylinder. The carding wire is bent in a spiral coinciding with carding wire (3) the teeth (23). The wire (3) spiral winding inner diameter is the same as the outer diameter of the carding surface (210). The ratio of the carding wire inner diameter to that of the carding surface (210) is less than 1.4. Also claimed is a process to make the carding wire in which the wire coils are held apart from adjacent coils during a coating process.
