In the present invention there is described a catalytic system capable of catalyzing ethylene carbonylation and carbonylation process of ethylene, which employs such catalytic system. A metal being selected from the group VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements, such as palladium or a compound thereof and bidentate phosphine such as bis (ditert-butylphosphino) -o-xylene represent this catalytic system.
