The invention relates to demodulating a signal in a multiple-access system with a spread spectrum using a pilot signal in a forward link. A multi-tap receiver splits signal processing based on the period during which processing occurs. Character frequency processing is performed through a single, shared, multiplying-accumulating data channel that serves a plurality of input tap stages and an input cascade of a search block. The input stages are specialized circuits that perform all processing with the frequency of the signal prints, the generation of a data vector, and the approval of a flag indicating that the results are ready for processing by a shared data channel.
