The component comprises two roughly rectangular portions, the wide one (2) extending over the lace holes and the adjacent part of the shoe. The lace (9) passes through an eye (4) on the wide portion between the lowermost lace holes. The wide portion joins onto a narrow tongue (3) inserted below the lace at the top end and secured when the latter is pulled tight. The component can be of leather, and the eye can be formed by a narrow strip secured to the component by two pins.
