Method and apparatus for analysis of macromolecular materials by pyrolysis

The apparatus comprises an oven for pyrolyzing the sample and a plurality of traps in parallel for trapping and holding pyrolyzate until the pyrolyzate can be analyzed for composition. As the pyrolysis temperature in the oven is continuously increased, pyrolyzate associated with a particular temperature band is directed to a particular predetermined trap. Each trap is separately disposed within its own cooling chamber so that each trap can be heated independently.
