PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly discriminate the kind of a disk. ;SOLUTION: Whether a disk set in the device is a CD or a DVD is discriminated by a CD discriminating sensor, and whether a DVD is an SL(single layer) disk or a DL(dual layer) disk is judged from reflectance of the disk. When the SL is judged first, but if this is wrong, provided that discrimination between the DL disk and the SL disk is not so reliable, discrimination at least between the DVD and the CD is low probability of making an error. Therefore, in this case, probability of the DVD is considered to be higher than probability of the CD, and the DL disk of the DVD is discriminated.
