At the time of manufacture of a cigarette composed whollyor in part of shreds or of ribs of expanded tobacco or of shortshreds, or else containing a lesser quantity of tobacco, diffi-culties are encountered in obtaining a cigarette having an ac-ceptable measured-compressibility value. By providing a cigarette-manufacturing machine (1) with acam (3) possessing at least one additional support surface (32A,33A, 34A, 35A), one can, just before the operation of trimming(15) the rod (20), compress a certain number of zones (22) ofsaid rod, thus increasing the tobacco density in these zones. A cigarette comprising one or more zones (22) having to-bacco density increased in this way has a measured-compressi-bility value equivalent to an ordinary cigarette.
