The fluid system coupled to the compressor (2), has a high pressure side (3) and a low pressure side (4). Drive simulation is produced by varying the pressure in the fluid system low pressure side. The pressure variations are controllably produced by the vol. in a container (15) connected to the fluid system low pressure side being varied. The pressure variations in the fluid system allow the loads on the compressor to be varied. The fluid in the fluid system comprises a mixt. of carbon dioxide and synthetic refrigerator compressor oil. The system incorporates a motor and transmission components which transmit drive power from the motor to the compressor. The container with the variable vol. consists of a cylinder and a piston, the vol. being varied by movement of the piston.
