The passenger aircraft has a number of rows of seats and some of the rows require to be configurable into three economy class or two or three business class seats. The seats have horizontal bars (11-16) forming the seat base and supported on rods (2) with telescopic couplings (3). A screw thread arrangement (5) is connected to the outside of the inner and central seats but acting in opposite directions. The central seat is also moved at twice the rate of the inner seat. A cable system (19) connects the movement to the back (9) of the centre seat. As the screw is driven the central seat narrows and the outer seats stretch.
