This system makes use of the principle of electrolysis to purify industrial waste water. Two electrical ion exchangers, one anionic and one cationic, consisting of two titanium electrodes set at a distance of 3 mm and separated by a porous septum which permits ion exchange are used. The water which passes between the septum and the electrode must travel at least 10 m over its surface to provide satisfactory exchange. The water enters the first anionic exchanger where it loses most of the anions, and it then goes to a clarifier where the organic cations precipitate out because of the very high pH; from here it passes to a cationic exchanger where it loses some of the cations and then enters a second clarifier where the organic anions are precipitated out because of the low pH. The salts concentrated in the two exchangers and the anionic and cationic sludges are placed in a silica fluidised bed furnace held at 800 degree C and reactions converting everything into insoluble and therefore non- polluting silicates take place within it.
