The method produces tear strips (2) and feeds a continuous strip (4) along a path (13) through a cutting station (5). The strip is transversely cut by a cutting unit (6) forming a succession of tear strips. Each teat strip is transferred to a release position along a second path (33a) in a different direction crosswise to the first path (14). The tear strips are fed axially along this path which comprises a portion (33) extending parallel to the tear strip in the release position and presents a equal length of tear strip. On reaching the release position the tear strip is retained in the second path.
