A television receiver comprises a closed-captionsignal demodulator, anexistence-of-closed-caption-signal discriminator locatedupstream of the demodulator, and a character memory forreading a character, which means that a closed-captionsignal exists on the screen of the television receiver,upon receipt of a discrimination signal indicating thata closed-caption signal exists in an image signal fromthe existence-of-closed-caption-signal discriminator.With this television receiver, the user can recognizeanytime that there exists a closed-caption signal in animage signal.
