In order to find the overall monitoring thresholdduring a bit-rate-reducing source coding of digitized audiosignals, a requantization and coding regulation for the timeor spectral scanning values of the audio signal is found fromthe masking effect of all relevant maskers and noise maskersand from the steady audio threshold. To this end the maskingsides of the selected maskers are segmented and approximatedin the individual segments by low-order polynomials, wherebythe coefficients of the low-order polynomials are found. Theintensities of the maskers converted into a logarithmic levelare used to find the coefficients of the low-order polynomials.The overall monitoring threshold is found at individual oreventually selected support points in steps, masker by masker,from the polynomials describing the masking sides of theeventually selected maskers.
