A mixture of at least one acid and at least onemetal compound enhance the stain resistance or acid dyefixation and resistance to cold water bleeding of fibrouspolyamide and wool substrates, for example, carpets,treated with a water-soluble sulfonated aromatic-aldehydecondensation resin, for example, sulfonated resole andsulfonated novolak type resins; at the same time animprovement in light fastness or non-yellowing isobtained and the durability or wash fastness of the stainresistance is improved; the condensation resin isoptionally employed in conjunction with a polymericmethacrylic acid. The acid of the mixture is one or moreof phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, citric acid andsulfuric acid; the metal compound is, in particular, asalt of magnesium, copper or aluminum.
