The present invention relates to a transgenicmouse to serve as a small animal model of AIDS whichcomprises the entire HIV-1 coding sequences under thecontrol of the human CD4 gene promoter flanked by theenhancer of the mouse CD4 gene for expression in Tcells. There is also provided a method to screen fortherapeutic agents for the treatment of AIDS, whichcomprises the steps of: a) administering thetherapeutic agent to the mouse of the presentinvention; and b) determining the effects of thetherapeutic agent.
