The expanding dowel comprises a thrust head (3) and a threaded tip (4) with a split body (5) between them which is expanded by drawing the tip towards the head when a bolt is screwed into it. The dowel is stamped from sheet metal, the tip made from a folded double layer forming outer (12) and inner threaded (13) surfaces with offset joints (15), formed e.g. from interlocking tongues (16) and notches (17). In addition, the head can be made detachable from the body of the dowel. The body of the dowel has an interlocking tongue and notch joint, made when the sheet metal is stamped, while slits cut in the head allow anchoring spikes (10,10') to be formed.
