AIRFOIL OUTRIGGER FOR TEAM RACE ROWING BOATS

The airfoil outrigger for team race rowing boats is fixed to the top edge of the boat (washboard) and consists of a plastic moulded body containing a glass, carbon or plastic fibre fabric or nonwoven, or of a metal moulded body. The airfoil outrigger has a middle part (1), an outrigger part (2) which extends from the middle part (1) to the starboard side and an outrigger part (3) which extends to the port side. Both outrigger parts (2, 3) end in the area of the thole pin bearing (4, 5). In order to optimise the seat distribution, and therefore to reduce the mass moment of inertia, the airfoil outrigger is designed in such a way that the distance (a) from the rear edge (14) to the front edge (15) of the central area of its middle part (1) is equal to or smaller than 10 cm. The rear edge (14) of the middle part of the outrigger most appropriately extends in a straight line in a vertical plane across the boat axis, whereas the front edge (15) is curved in such a way that its shortest distance from the rear edge is located in the vertical mid-plane of the boat.
