The invention relates to a method for the production of highly pure, short-chain, alkylated, quaternary ammonium hydroxides. In the past, known methods of producing alkylated, quaternary ammonium hydroxides have presented various disadvantages. Said substances were not suitable for mass production because of relatively high manufacturing costs. It is difficult to recover base materials used, especially long-chain alkylated quaternary ammonium salts. The inventive method is characterized in that long-chain alkylated, quaternary ammonium salts are made to react with metal hydroxides and converted into long-chain alkylated, quaternary ammonium hydroxides and the long-chain alkylated quaternary ammonium hydroxides are subsequently made to react with short-chain alkylated, quaternary ammonium salts converting them into short-chain alkylated quaternary ammonium hydroxides.
