The breakdown of cross-linked elastomers, including the devulcanization of crumb rubber, is achieved by exposing the elastomers to ultrasonic vibrations induced by magnetostriction transducers. The transducers are capable of a higher power output than ultrasound produced by piezoelectric transducers, and are able to withstand high temperatures and high-frequency vibrations to a significantly better degree.
