A method for manufacturing a subminiature fuse (11) includes steps of applying metallized coatings (30) to surfaces (28 and 29) at axially opposite ends (22 and 24) of a hollow fuse body (20), placing a fuse element (40) in an internal cavity (26) in the fuse body (20), the fuse element (40) extending from the first end (42) to the second end (44) of the cavity, placing a one of a solder and brazing preform (50) and end terminatin (54) at each of the first and second ends (22 and 24) of the cavity (26), and heating the assembled fuse body (20), fuse element (40), solder preforms (50) and end terminations (54) to a temperature sufficient to cause the solder preforms (50) to bond the fuse element (40) to the end terminations (54) and for the end terminations (54) to bond with the metallized end portions of the fuse body, wherein the end terminations (54) form hermetic seals closing the ends of the cavity (26). A subminiature fuse according to the invention includes a fuse body (20) with a fuse element (40) diagonally disposed in the body. The fuse body (20) includes metallized end portions to which the end terminations are bonded. One of a solder and brazing preform (50) bond the fuse element (40) to the end terminations (54).
