A system (104,204) and method for estimating top contributing stations (102,202) of a local area network (101,201). A traffic analyzer (104,204) of the present invention determines the top N stations producing and receiving traffic on a local area network. The traffic analyzer (104,204) performs this technique with limited storage space (501). To determine the top contributors (102,202) the present invention utilizes a method of matching, sorting, creating, and purging records in storage in relation to captured frames (303) received from stations (102,202) on the LAN (101,201).
