Method and apparatus for implementing a quasi-product code with different degrees of protection against errors

We describe encoding and decoding of digital data with different degrees of error protection. The uniform-sized user elements of data are distributed over an array, encoded according to a first dimension by adding first redundant elements of said uniform size corresponding to a first linear code, and encoded according to a second dimension by adding second redundant elements of said uniform size corresponding to a second linear code. In particular, the first linear coding for at least one first line of user elements realizes a higher degree of error protection than for at least one second line of user elements and the former is realized as a first code that has more of said first redundant elements than the latter that is realized as a second code.
