The invention relates to a process for coating highly reflective mirrors and to a mirror of this type in which a base element containing the contour is provided with three layers (1-3). The innermost layer (1) serves either as a barrier layer which takes on protection of the base element when the coating is renewed, or a support layer which, when the coating is renewed, is removed without leaving a residue, but without damaging the base element, with the consequence that the overlying layers (2, 3) are also removed. In this way, the on-site treatment of mirrors is possible despite a protective layer (3) on the reflection layer (2).
