An apparatus for the repair of cranio-maxillofacial bony defects is described comprising a bio-compatible scaffolding (12) with an insert segment (13) positioned at the proximal surface of the bone defect and stabilized with support means (15), coupled with bone replacement material (21a) applied distal to the scaffolding insert segment (13) and generally filling the defect. Most preferably, the bone replacement material (21a) is a low temperature hardening, gradually resorbable hydroxyapatite forming cement. Also taught are surgical methods for the repair of cranio-maxillofacial bony defects employing the scaffolding and the bone replacement material; and kits including the scaffolding and material are included.
