Use of a bioluminescence assay to detect microorganisms in dispersions containing polymers and/or pigments is claimed. Also claimed is a method for detecting microorganisms in dispersions containing polymers and/or pigments, comprising: (a) diluting a sample of the dispersion with water; (b) treating the diluted sample with a microorganism-lysing agent; (c) adding a mixture of luciferin and luciferase, and (d) measuring the luminescence of the sample.
