The apparatus consists of a gas-tight reaction chamber, an element for passage of a laser beam, an opening for entry of reaction gas, and a gas mixing station. The gas-tight reaction chamber consist of two component groups (1, 2) which are movable on carrier gas cushions relative to one another in a horizontal plane. The opposing surfaces (4, 5) of the component groups (1, 2) take the form of plane sliding surfaces. The surfaces (5) are dimensioned so that motions relative to the component group (1) can exceed the extent of the surface (6) of the component (7) undergoing treatment. The component group (1) is provided with a channel (8) with adjacent surfaces (9, 10) shaped so that the bulk of the carrier gas escapes outwards. A cross-jet suction system (17) serves for removal of reaction products. Means (20) are foreseen for monitoring the partial pressure of oxygen. Openings (21) serve for visual and microscopic observation of the melting process.
