Process for preparation of 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TAD) via the intermediate 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidylidene)amino-piperidine

Production of 4-amino-2,2,6,6- tetramethyl-piperidine (TAD; formula (I)) comprises (1) reacting 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-4-one (TAA; formula (II)) with TAD to give 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-Ä(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4- piperidylidene)aminoÜ-piperidine (Imine formula (III)) and then (2) reacting (III) with ammonia and hydrogen in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give 2 mol equivalents of TAD. Also claimed is a process for the production of (III) by reaction of (I) with (II).
