The method involves detecting the level (27) of received noise within the bands of the reception filters. The received signal is translated into baseband (I,Q) using a discrete Fourier transform (21). The detected energy values for the centre frequencies of the reception filters are summed (23). The noise levels are subtracted (30,31) from the energy bands. The resultant energy values are compared (32-36) and a frequency shift estimate is produced.
