Asymmetric polyhydroxy-ethers (IA) of formula (I), prepared by the specified method are new; (HO)(W-m)W(OV)m (I); W = an organic group; w = the functionality of a polyhydric alcohol of formula (II); W-(OH)w (II); m = 1 to w; OV = a structural element containing hydroxyl groups of formula (III); -O-(CHX-CY(M)-CHZ-O)nH (III); X, Y = hydrogen, 1-6 C alkyl, aryl, alkoxymethyl or aryloxymethyl or Y also is carbalkoxymethyl, carbamidomethyl or M; Z = H, 1-6 C alkyl or aryl; or X-Z = 2-3 C alkylene; M = -CH2OH or a group of formula (IV); -CH2-O-(CHX-CY(CH2OH)-CHZ-O)n-H (IV); n, n' = 1-5; the alkyl and aryl groups in X, Y, Z may be substituted. (IA) exclude symmetric compounds (IB) in which the C skeleton of W and the monomer structural element of OV are the same.
