The present invention relates to a smoke tester for testing the exhaust emission level of an engine from a smoke adsorption site that absorbs smoke emitted from an automobile engine, and includes an LED projecting light onto the smoke adsorption site and an LED reflected from the smoke adsorption site. And a light detecting unit for detecting the light intensity of the light and a discriminating unit for determining the exhaust emission level of the engine according to the light intensity detected by the light detecting unit. Thereby, the smoke tester which remains constant without change in the characteristic with use, and which has strong durability and little measurement error, and the smoke test method by such a smoke tester are provided.
