The present invention provides a receiver for a discrete multi-tone system and a phase error compensating method. The present invention includes an analog/digital converter; a time zone equalizer receiving a digital signal from the converter and computing a sample delay value; a buffer receiving an output signal from the equalizer, delay-holding that signal by the sample delay value, and shifting and converting the stored value into a parallel signal in response to a first control signal; a demodulator demodulating an output signal from the buffer; a frequency band equalizer receiving the demodulated signal and compensating each carrier wave's phase error in response to a second control signal; a receiver decoding the compensated signal and converting it into a serial signal; a digital phase locked loop receiving a pilot tone from the frequency band equalizer, computing a phase error value, and dividing it into a constant value and a decimal value; a phase error controller receiving and converting the constant value and producing it as the second control signal; and a time delay control part receiving the constant value and producing it as the first control signal.
