The present invention relates to a high efficiency catalytic contamination control method for removing N 2 O from a gas mixture. The present invention employs catalysts derived from anionic clay materials that provide good N 2 O decomposition activity after moderate thermal activation. The catalytic process of the present invention comprises contacting the N 2 O-containing gas mixture with a cracking catalyst under conditions sufficient to convert N 2 O into nitrogen gas and oxygen gas. The catalysts of the present invention are derived from anionic clay materials such as hydrotalcite, yogurenite and pyroolite.
