POINTING DEVICE TRANSDUCER USING THICK FILM RESISTOR STRAIN SENSORS

A cursor control pointing device for controlling a computer screen cursor includes a thick film resistor and a rigid base for the post on the side of the post that acts as a strain gauge for detecting post, lateral and back post bending. Thick-film resistors are piezo-resistive, whose resistivity varies with strain. Two resistance splitting networks are formed so that one network with resistors on the left and right senses the X-axis deflection and the other with the front and rear resistors detects the Y-axis deflection. The voltage divided by the network is processed to form a cursor control signal, which moves the cursor to the X and Y coordinates on the computer display screen.
