The present invention relates to modified, plant, fruit, or synthetic oligo- or polysaccharides that have undergone structural changes to provide an altered saccharide that is antigenically similar to the Vi of Salmonella typhi. These modified saccharides may bind to a carrier to form a conjugate exhibiting immunogenicity against Salmonella typhi, and an antibody produced in response to this conjugate exhibiting immunogenicity may prevent enterovirus. The present invention also provides methods of making modified saccharides and conjugates exhibiting immunogenicity.
