The noise attenuator comprises a tubular housing (1) which is lined with sound-insulating material (2) and comprises a wider rear section (3) and a narrower front one (4). Lateral outlets (11) with deflectors (5,7) are provided at the forward end of the rear section, inside which there can be strips (20) inclined to the lengthwise axis of the housing so as to direct the gases from the muzzle towards the outlets. The strips can be detachable and interchangeable. The housing can be of wood, with a trapezium-shaped opening (14) in the bottom (13) at the rear end of the rear section.
