Producing a sliding surface (2) providing a hydrodynamic lubrication function on a metallic workpiece (1) involves forming a micro-pressure chamber system of lubrication pits (7) by machining. The workpiece (1) is made of an aluminium alloy having, on the surface concerned, a thermally sprayed wear layer which is partially removed by machining to expose the lubrication pits. The wear layer is formed from a spray powder comprising 20-60% molybdenum powder and 80-40% steel powder. Also claimed is a reciprocating piston engine, esp. an i. c. engine, with a crankcase having a cylinder tracks, the surfaces of which are produced by the above method.
