The apparatus is operated under controlled pressure to determine biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and comprises a reaction vessel (4) interconnected with both an oxygen generator (3) and an electrical manometer (2). When the pressure and a conductive liquid level fall, an electrode pair supplies a signal to the control unit which then feeds current to the oxygen generator to restore the pressure. The electric manometer (2) has upper, central and lower cavities. The upper is connected to the oxygen line (7), and to the central cavity. A riser tube connects the central and lower cavities. A defined level of conductive fluid is maintained in this vessel and separates a gas in the lower cavity, from that in the upper cavity. The electrolyte-containing oxygen generator is sealed, with an electrode pair introduced through the plug and connected to the controller (5).
