Light-triggered power thyristor using free-floating technology

The thyristor (10) has a semiconductor disc (17) with a light-sensitive trigger zone (28) contained within a hermetically sealed housing (11) and provided with two parallel disc electrodes (16,19). The electrodes contact opposite sides of the semiconductor disc and the stack provided by the electrodes and the intermediate semiconductor disc is held together via a mechanical clamp (20a,20b). A second mechanical device (24,25) secures the stack in position relative to the housing.
