Low-flammability granular material made from scrap tyre rubber granules to construct e.g. vibration dampers or conveyor belts

A low-flammability granular material, made of comminuted rubber waste is new. The particles (1) include a core (2) of waste rubber, coated by a low-flammability casing (3). This comprises cross-linked polymer mixed with flame retardant. Also claimed are (A) manufacture of the material comprising (i) mixing comminuted waste rubber with a flame retardant and an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of crosslinkable polymer components, (ii) heating until crosslinking is initiated, and (iii) encasing the particles with the polymer, without adhering to them; and (B) use of the material, where the particles (1) are mixed, preferably with a low flammability elastomeric binder (4), which is moulded into low-flammability, especially vibration-damping sections e.g. layers, bands, blocks, or mouldings (5).
